Most first aid courses last 1 day (such as Emergency First Aid at Work). Full First Aid at Work courses take 3 days, and Paediatric First Aid takes 12 hours (typically blended learning).

Most first aid certificates are valid for 3 years. After this time, you must complete a requalification or full course again to stay compliant.

Training duration depends on the course:

  • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW): 1 day
  • First Aid at Work (FAW): 3 days
  • FAW Requalification: 2 days
  • Paediatric First Aid: 12 hours (6 hours online + 6 hours classroom)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) & AED: Half day

HSE recommends a refresher every year to keep skills sharp. Certificates must be fully renewed every 3 years.

Wear comfortable clothing suitable for kneeling, bending, and practical activities (e.g., jeans, joggers, t-shirt). Avoid skirts, heels, or restrictive clothing.
